‘Begin at once to live, and count each separate day as a separate life.’ ~Seneca
As my birthday approaches I think about what I’ve learned, allow me to share my thoughts:
Love the small pleasures of life. A jog in the evening light, a square of rich, dark chocolate with a strong coffee, a good book to enjoy after a productive day, a moment of quiet as the birds sing…
Want little and you are rich. You can have a lot of money and possessions, but if you are always looking for more, you are not as well off as she who has little but is satisfied. Not wanting something is as good as possessing it.
Be grateful for the life you have. Every day is a gift, not to be full of deadlines but to be savoured and appreciated, spend time enjoying it, not devouring it.
See life as a garden, not a road. Where we go matters less than what we notice.
It’s December already, a month full of special events and holidays – and, let’s face it, stress!
So instead of rushing around blindly fulfilling social obligations, I would invite you to take a few minutes to center yourself and clarify some important goals. Ready? Now, imagine yourself at your own 80th birthday party. Ask yourself what the highlights of your life would be from that time looking back. Once you have a clear picture of what you value, of what is truly important to you in the big picture, you can get started on making these experiences and achievements a reality.
Maybe your future self focused upon time spent in nature with your family, or on writing a book, or time spent immersed in another country learning a new language. Now, see how this can shine light upon your activities in the here and now. Perhaps it is not as important as you thought to focus as much on the details of shopping and being the “perfect” holiday host …
When we give ourselves permission to make new choices based upon what we truly value, energy and enthusiasm begin to circulate anew and stress subsides. So take heart – reclaim the holiday season by CHOOSING what you celebrate!
Part of the coaching process is building in the celebration factor for those shining moments in life when personal goals are reached.
In this post Valerie & I would like to share with you Moments in Montreal where we celebrate our goal of meeting up once a year to either do a workshop together or present on the International Conference Circuit (watch out next year for Moments in Morocco!)
What shining moments are you working towards at the moment and how are you going to enjoy celebrating?
We are very excited about our latest event, we are offering a 2-day program in Montreal entitled “Coaching Mastery for Leadership”.
This workshop will follow the four-quadrant outline of HH2FF, that is: Inspiration, Implementation, Integration and Celebration.
The workshop will be held on July 19-20, 2010 at the Padua Centre for Urban Spirituality, and will be offered without charge.
Voluntary donations will go towards the inner city Padua Centre and its Black Youth Leadership program. Registration is limited to 30 participants, so be sure to reserve your spot in advance.
We are pleased to be offering this pro bono workshop as a way to live out our value of sharing with the community (while still being true to our other deep values: teamwork and having fun while continually learning!).
